Redundancy Looms

Redundancy is looming again and with it come the usual questions. How will I cope? Why me? What have I done wrong? Then comes the realisation that of course it really has very little to do with me, it’s a purely economic decision. It does grate a little that when it comes down to the crunch, you end up just another number on the balance sheet, but I’ve been here before and have learnt to accept that no matter how much loyalty you show your company, in bad times, that loyalty will not be repaid.

That said, although I’m on the list, so are two other people in my role, so there is a two in three chance that it will not be me. Not bad odds. The major problem is that I’ve only had one week of billable work since the beginning of the year, and even less towards the end of last year. On a positive note, there is a whole load of change request work from the last project on the horizon, so by the time the final decision is made, I should be 100% billable again.

At least my current employer is handling the whole situation with a good degree of professionalism, not like the last two times I’ve been through this process. Full public and individual consultations, with elected representatives and a properly supervised process. The representatives even got a day of training from an external company, so they should be in a pretty good position to get us through this with the least amount of pain.

I will keep you posted on here and if anyone out there has any jobs for a senior user experience person, give me a shout…
